Desert Mountain High School opened in 1995 and is one of five high schools in the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD). Current attendance is 2,380 students, including 613 seniors.  DMHS became an IB World School in 1998 and was reauthorized in 2004. Through an SUSD open enrollment program, many metropolitan Phoenix students come to Desert Mountain specifically to join the IB Program. The 2008-2009 pre-Diploma and IB Diploma Programs enroll 330 students.
